Pigs come and pigs go. They touch not
only our lives but our hearts. Some we know only through pictures
and stories about them on the Internet or through friends.
Pigs are unique in that no two pigs are alike. They
come in many colors, shapes, sizes and breeds. Each one has his or her own
personality. Some are shy, some outgoing, some just sweet, and some
prefer just to be left to themselves to live out their lives.
Sabrina came into our lives just for a very short
time. She was a local rescue out of Lehigh Acres, Florida. She had
been raised in a home with only a dog for a friend. They spent their
days together laying in the sun and swimming in a local canal. Then came
the day she had to move because her home was being sold. It was a
sad day for us in rescue, as it is with most cases. We knew
the move would be traumatic for her, not only losing her home, canal
and special friend but also having to adjust to a new environment and
home.
She was first placed into a foster home while we
searched for just the right home. Finally one was found in New York and
plans were made for her move. It was now November and it was
turning cold up north so we knew things had to move quickly. Once in New
York she would be allowed to live in an insulated barn until Spring when
she could acclimate to the new home and climate. On the fifth of
November the veterinarian came to draw her blood
for the required testing to be done before she could be moved out of
state. Since she was so large and could not be easily held, the
vet said she had to be sedated for the blood draw. Things seems to
go well but she was slow to recover from the anesthesia. Saturday found her no
better. By noon on Saturday she began to go downhill and by mid
afternoon she had crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge.
Sabrina is now running free at the Rainbow Bridge
awaiting those who have heard her story and fell in love with her. She
is sadly missed by all who came to know her.
Sabrina's legacy now lives on through a special fund
that will help other pigs in medical need, plus closely related matters
pertaining to the pig issue. The "Sabrina Fund" was founded by Dr. Joan
Poster of Connecticut and administered by The Pig Preserve Association, Inc.
